When I was still studying, aside from grades, one of my problems was to find a summer job every time a school year ends — no school means no allowance, and no allowance means I can’t do whatever I want or go to places I want to visit. And if you’re a student, I’m pretty sure this is also one of your problems. So instead of wasting your summer vacation by being a tambay, here are 12 cool summer job ideas for you this 2019!
Summer Job Ideas for High School Students in 2019
Since there are many students who are below 18 years old, here are some sidelines that are applicable to you.
1. Provide Tutoring Services
If you’re good in a particular subject, you can actually use this as a leverage and earn from providing tutoring services to younger students or even to your classmates. If you know someone who needs help in a particular subject, and you think you can help them, you can go ahead and ask them (or their parents) if you can offer your tutoring services. You’ll help them understand a certain topic, and they’ll help you back in return!
Nowadays, the rate is at P100 – P150 per hour, depending on the subject. If you think that you can provide a better service, you can charge higher than P150 per hour. But be careful not to charge too much, ‘coz they might just study on their own instead of paying for your services — learn to balance.
2. Pet Sitter / Dog Walker
Most Filipino families take advantage of the summer vacation and often go out of town, which means no one will be left to take care of their pets. This is an opportunity for you to be their pet sitter while they are away.
If you’re a pet lover, this is the perfect summer job for you. If you know a neighbor, a relative, or even a friend’s family who’s going out of town, offer them your services!
We all know that dogs, cats, and even birds need to be taken care of (just like babies!) and this is your chance to earn during your summer vacation.
If everything goes well, they can be your regular clients. So you can be sure that there’s a gig waiting for you every summer!
3. Offer Computer Repair Services
More and more high school students become computer savvy nowadays. So if you’re someone who’s good at fixing computers, this can be your gig this summer vacation! You can offer computer reformatting, software installation, hardware repair, and many more!
Doing this gig isn’t only limited during summer vacation, as you can also do this as a sideline all year round. Nice way to earn extra for your allowance, right?
4. Internet Shop Attendant or Staff
Gaming shops are still really popular nowadays, so if you know an internet café who might need an extra attendant or staff, this can be an opportunity for you. Imagine being able to play while earning — sweet deal right?
5. Be A Babysitter
Babysitting is actually among the most common summer jobs for students not only here in the Philippines but also in other countries. So if you’re someone who loves babies and can endure being around silly kids, this is the perfect summer job for you. Some ‘employers‘ even let their babies’ nannies have free meals, though this really depends on the agreed terms, but if you land one that does provide free meals on top of your pay, it would be really nice.
6. SPES (Special Program for Employment of Students)
Did you know that the government has this program to help those poor (deserving) students earn during summer. SPES is open not only to high school students, but also to college and vocational students. You can check out this link for more information on how you can join this program. Just a little reminder that you need to be at least 15 (up to 25) years old in order to be part of the program.
7. Put Up Your Own Small Business
Yes, you can also be a businessman / businesswoman this summer vacation. For a very small capital (~P50) you can start your own small business and sell the following:
- Iced Candy
- Ice & Iced Water
- Palamig
- Halo-halo
- Sago’t Gulaman
So with just a small investment, you can easily double (or even triple) your earnings this summer vacation. And since the weather is generally hot in the Philippines, you can also start selling all throughout the year and have some extra allowance! Your imagination is the limit.
8. Video Editing or Graphics Design
Like what I’ve previously mentioned, more and more students get well-versed with computer programs nowadays. So if you have the skills (and computer rig) to do video or photo editing, you can actually use it to earn this summer. Some of the common projects for this type of gig are tarpaulins, artworks, short videos, and even digital portraits.
And since you’re already on Facebook, you can also setup your own FB page and and take your business online. This way, you won’t be just limited to offering your services to friends and relatives but also to other people who are looking for the services you offer online.

Some college students do not only do this during summer vacations — but they are also working students, which means they work after school. Some even work so that they have money for their allowance and school expenses. (A huge props to those hardworking students!)
So if you’re up to the challenge of being a crew, not only you will develop your sense of doing customer service but you’ll also earn some money for yourself. And you might start to appreciate how hard it is to earn money.

4. Be A Blogger
Although it takes time to earn through blogging, this can be a good project to start this summer, so by the time you go back to school, you’ll already have lots of posts and then start monetizing your blog. There are tons of resources online that will help you set up a blog, but take in mind that this might require you to shell out some cash in the beginning, think of it as your investment.
